Merchant of Bollywood
And as usual, I am not in a chatty mood so... point forms ahead.
The good:
- Good opening number
- Incredible dancers with great energy and flair. They can go round and round tirelessly.
- The cast, especially the female and male lead have great chemistry which make it more enjoyable.
- Beautiful dance. The classical dance was exquisite. The modern one is just as energetic and fun.
- The enthusiasm of the cast in lifting up the crowd cries and fervor for MORE!MORE!MORE! And the cast oblige.
The meh:
- The stage sets does not varies nor impress. But the cars prop are cute.
- The songs are kinda "I never heard that". Maybe I am not that familiar with 70s Bollywood.
- The first act was a bit of a doozy. Only in the second act things seems to be a bit interesting
- The storyline is too simplistic. I guess I wished there was a bit more in the story.
Summary:
Great fun. Go for the dances and hot chicks with toned abs shaking and dancing. (which the guys sitting right at the front when we were there seems to be enjoying)

All that Jazziness

Which of course pisses me off since I believe I missed some early bit from the show since I need to wait for my plus one. Its nowhere his fault, but damn I'm still pissed. Sorry, but that just who I am.
Which also causes me to not be able to wholly enjoyed the show as I was steamingly furious. Have to say again, and I know and he stated a few times, its not his fault that he is late... but THAT IS JUST WHO I AM, me who hated waiting and being late for shows (be it wayang or such). Ehem.. now I get that off my chest, let's get on the program.
I won't go into a lengthy review, but here's what I like and don't. Those who wants to know more about what's the story about, of course can kindly head to wiki here (where else..).
I like..
- few of Velma Kelly dance numbers. Shows great stamina and skills.
- Mama Morton number on "When you're good to Mama..". Great vocal. Wishes it have more snaps and vim into it, in term of performance. But the vocal as itself is spellbinding enough to be kept entertained. Her voice is extraordinary.
- Witty and cheeky lines. I meant lines in term of songs and dialogue (that is not incorporate in songs). Even better than the film ( which I thoroughly enjoyed..).
- Amos. He was sad in the movie (and make our heart breaks..) and in term of the stage, he still makes me feel the same, funnier even but a lil heartbreaking as the man cuckolded.
- The songs and the orchestra. Eiii.. nice... Kudos especially for the orchestral crew on their loud extravagant brassy numbers. I fell in love with the saxophone player (ohhh.. childhood memories flooding back) .
- Their songs is really great, even the one I didn't like before .. "We Both Reached for the Gun". The ventriloquist number is awesomeness.
- The sets in general. I felt like we didn't get our full entertainment value in term of the high price of tickets they charged. The sets is lacklustre. It is bright, yes, keeping in theme with Chicago. However... that's it? For a musical stage, that's should be a successful one in Broadway, all we get in term of the stage special effects is bright flashing lights and prison bars silhoutte at the back? Props is few and the sets, is what you see is what you get. Dissapointing. I am not sure if this is because of KL Convention Centre vs Istana Budaya that is more equipped to handle more stage effects, sets and props in its full glory or Chicago don't depend on a whole lot of stage effects or sets. We'll see, maybe will watch Beauty and the Beast next year pulak and compare if its really the case.
- The wig or hair or extension on Roxie. Small things to harp on, I know.. Tapi in this production Roxie and Velma have the same cut. So yang duduk jauh tuh2, dark haired and red haired looked almost the same lor, thus hard to differentiate at first.
- Some of the dance numbers, especially All that Jazz. Not enough snap and vim as I said before, as much as I like it or expected of a show that boast of its choreography numbers.
- The girls are not as scantily clad as I wish. Hahaha.. kidding, but wishes adalah lebey sexeh okeh.
- The humongous head that was in front me thus blocking my view especially during the delicious number of Cell Block Tango. Eiiiiii... Okay.. bukan salah production, but still la kann.. Gah!
All in all, I felt somewhat satisfied (even if I was simmering a bit) watching all my favorite numbers in action. Not sure however if I want to give it another go. Rather popped in the CD for the movie version plak. More satisfactory and besto.
So.. abes dah ke Musicals I wish to see? Nah. Wicked!!! Datang lah Malaysia!! Paling bangsat pon Singapore.
From what I heard and seen in little bits in Ugly Betty, Wicked macam awesome and the songs is quite nice. Sigh.. tho methinks its gonna be quite a few years baru a tour would be coming around in Asia.
Oh well..

With a little illumination
This procrastination is due to the most part, computer problem at home. My computer is dying. While Effi's one is raring to go and is quite a Spartan if it comes into battle, Lee's are magnet to virus, mine is just silently wishing its owner would end its pathetic life and let it R.I.P. Therefore it is slowly shutting down its functions on me. Oh no. I don't have any money to upgrade or fix my computer. My moolah well is dried up . I believe I have to turn to my backup moolah well to survive this month. I am officially broke for the next 3 months. Therefore any suggestion to "Eh... orang dah keje kan.. belanja la..", would receive a response in a manner of a grunt and dagger-like looks. So I still need to ride my computer as an elderly, sickly, obedient donkey that it is.
While I usually also blogged at office, work is screaming blue bloody murder (I have no idea what it meant. I just put it in.) Well, in plain language. Keje banyak la. There's a whole lots of tickets coming in and I end up coming at home wishing ... well just wishing that there is no such thing as working for money.
Ah well.. introduction di atas pon dah sangat lah panjang kan. Moving on.

As for the Singapore trip, before any of you spouts off questions if had I gone to Sentosa Island, Geyland (wth is in Geyland anyway?), shopping trips, food intake trips. I went to Singapore with one purpose in mind. To watch Phantom of the Opera. Even if it means I have to sleep at the very squeaky clean streets of Singapore. Actually no.. even if it means no decent cheap hotel available, I would fork out money to stay at the 5 Star hotel, just as so I can go see the musical.
I went with Gohan since she shares my interest (though I doubt that she knows the lyrics like me ^_^ (My attempts at emoticon is pathetic..)
I had been in love with the musical since I was 12. Which is weird because,
- I had never seen the musical.
- I had never seen the movie
- I never read its book.
However I had heard the music. Thus I fell in love.
The Esplanade was a disappointment. Outside and lobby-wise I guess. But it have no wasteful space. I meant kinda like you see these big building that have all these beautiful open spaces. Esplanade theater seems to use each of its space effectively. But I am no expert nor fan in architecture design, thus I'm ending my view on this matter.
We went early and when ushered to our seat... I just realized that I actually had purch
ased the front row seats. (What? I don't realize this before.? I bought the tickets monthssss ago.. You think I remember?) . We sat just right in front of those musician ensembles. While waiting for the show to start, we also take a peek to see those musician prepare themselves. (Not one of them is handsome)
Now the seat. Ohhh... at first I was nervous , if its actually ok. But my friend seems to be delighted. She said we can see all those in life size stature (instead of the tiny mini Tiara Jacqueline we saw at Puteri Gunung Ledang theatre). And goodies isn't she right. I reckon one of the cast spit even came flying at me.
Looking at their costume, make up, set designs that close. I can only say wow.
The show itself?
Fantastic. The. Best. Ever. Musical.
If its in Kuala Lumpur. I believe I would have seen it at least 3 times. At different seating. To see how it look like from a different view.
What I love? How would thee count the way...
First, the music of course. Duh. I use to listen to it daily. Until I lost the CD. Boo. My ultimate favorite was Phantom of the Opera and Think of Me. Now Masquerade and Music of the Night is becoming a great favorite too.
Then the stage design and sets. When you came into the theatre. You see it looks dreary (Let me explain by: the start of the show , as like the movie, it showed the theatre in almost ruins , long past the time of the story, then the story goes back in time telling the story of Phantom and Christine) . The side panel of the theatre are all covered with some cloth that look like organza. Then.. when it came to the Phantom time, its almost like magic seeing the stage transformed. Seeing the drapery being pulled all around the stage is almost like seeing time unraveling before your eyes. Especially since you are at the center front row seat.
Which brings me to another part of the show that I love. The effect. Earlier there was a sign outside the doors warning that this show have gunshot effect sounds and loud bang sounds ; something like that la. We were puzzled seeing those. The show goes back in time when the auctioneer, showing the infamous chandelier told to light it up... "With a little illumination..". Then with a bang (and a small scream from me. Shock, ok... ) and sparks going around the chandelier, the chandelier swung upwards, (many scream by others...who's also in front.). Revealing what the stage might had look like those many years ago. Words doesn't do it justice. You need to see it. Eik. Now those who hadn't seen it will lose the surprise. Well too bad. Thehe.
The cast. I heard from a snobby looking chick during intermission, saying she thinks the cast is.. well badly cast. Physical wise. Complaining that Carlotta should be pretty and slim . Huh? If you want to see those stick figure pretty little thing, go and see the movie la. Not that I have anything against the movie. Just that, I think the woman cast as Carlotta in this show, is well.. Carlotta. Christine , well I am tad bit disappointed. She looks a bit old, and tired. But when she start singing. The voice is lovely is an understatement. I read the review, where they say that Christine voice in this production, is almost innocence-like. Not as powerful as Carlotta. I tend to disagree, where Carlotta voice brimmed with maturity of age, Christine is just as powerful, but lacking those maturity. But I don't feel her voice is as innocence-like or sweet-like. That, is what Sarah Brightman and there is another person (can't remember the name) the one in the London production, that have those quality and well reverberate it with Christine.
And Raoul. Oh my fluttering heart . Handsome Gila! Even with all those piles of make up and blusher. You can see that. That he is REALLY handsome. If one would have a dream of castle in clouds, white horses with wings. He is the handsome prince that came astride in one of those white horses lording that castle.
Of the musical number, I most love seeing performed was Masquerade. Oh... it was lovely. Just as I would imagine it would be.
I ended up spending a whole lot on the Phantom's merchandise. This is to make up on the loss of merchandise I didn't shop during Disney Beauty and the Beast on Ice show..student trainee salary doesn't afford such luxury . Lemme see. A locket. 2 mugs. 1 Programme Book. The CD. Some fridge thingies for my sister. (Mcm byk lagi je tapi I totally forgot)
Now.. is there any part of the show which I don't like? Well.. the chandelier doesn't go down as dramatically as it went up. But apart from that. I am well satisfied. It is a well spent 300Rm ticket. I'm glad that I catch it. Even though I was watching the show with heavy lidded eyes. I hadn't slept for more than 24 hours! (Curse bloody well lit bus that doesn't make it as comfy for me to sleep after working on night shift)
The cast was talented. (My eardrums throbbed several times during the show whenever the divas are belting out their piece). The stage was beautiful, well design and creatively used. The musical numbers is just as entertaining and beautiful as I expected it to be.
Now. If I can just only buy another of those Phantom CD. It seems my sister want mine.

Wangi Jadi Saksi

I just got back from watching Wangi Jadi Saksi from Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka.
Being naturally lazy, and I don't think so I am adept in writing synopsis regarding theatre, this is the excerpt from Axcess website,
" ...is the story of Hang Jebat's betrayal and murder, as told through the eyes of his young widow Dang Wangi, as she confronts those accountable for her husband's death. Using flashbacks and flash-forwards, Jebat's confrontations with his comrades and nemesis are revealed through a provocative new interpretation of this historical and legendary event."
Got all excited to watch this since I would love to see Vanida Imran up close (even though in a theatre and hundreds metres away) and I love the story of Jebat and Tuah. There is this one painting I always remembered, of Tuah and Jebat fighting and tombak and lembing are sticking out from the floor. So, my interest was piqued, thus I bought the tickets.
Manage to get to Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka in the nick of time to collect my ticket and bought the programme book. Those who plan to watch this, I would recommend you to get the programme book. It would clear out some of the dialogues that you don't manage to grasp.
Anyway, my thought on it? It was beautifully performed since you can see right away that the well known actors and actresses are very talented; among those apart from Vanida Imran is, Dato' Rahim Razali, Sabri Yunus and also worth mentioning are Khalid Salleh and Khir Rahman. Khir Rahman as Hang Tuah gave such dignified persona to Hang Tuah that I felt awe again of Hang Tuah as the great legend. Hang Jebat is cleverly played by Mohammad Shoffi Jikan, whose dialogue give an earthly feel to the theatre. However, since am not a professional reviewever and all, actually I just want to said, all of the actors and actress deserved the praise they get.
Everything went on beautifically I must say. Great performance. Good lighting. Vibrant, lilting 'score?' , just the right music (which I think was lacking in PGL the movie). Effective stage design, but some of the props have a hasty feel on it. Costume? Period costume in simple colors. I love it. Most of all, the script. Magnificent. Kudos to the scripwriters. The script is just lovely. The plot, give a new twist on the legend of Tuah and Jebat final fight.
At first, I struggled a bit to understand the dialogues since my Kesusasteraan Bahasa Melayu is a bit rusty. Not to mention Jawi reading too. LOL. The first scene is shown behind a see through 'tirai' with the prologue of the story shown in Jawi. Those are marvellous idea indeed. As the story played out, I then manage to grasp on what they are really saying and enjoyed myself wholeheartedly. My only (real) complaint of the performance is Vanida Imran should not be singing. Hehe. My very real complaint of the experience, is of 2 annoying persons, 1 who doesn't seems to get it that she or he needed to at least silent your phone. That annoying phone received messages 3 times, which all audiences in the dewan manage to hear. The no. 2 person , is the one who talk on the phone while the show played on. Sheesh, that's annoying and really inconsiderate.
Not wanting to end this post with a complaint , I will say.... wooohooo. : P

Grease Lightning
Sounds familiar? Well that is because that is the lyric from Grease, You're the One That I Want. Shoots. I had always love Grease. I remembered watching it when I was small and prancing around afterwards. I also stumbled on my aunts book on Grease which have the lyrics and all the pictures from the movie which I loved to pore over. John Travolta was the hottest in the movie.
When someone mentioned to me months ago that they'll be performing in KL, this is a DEFINITE NOT to be missed opportunity. My all time favorite movie, my all time favorite song, Summer Night (tell me more, tell me more..). A must see for self-professed Grease lover . So I bought the ticket that I can most afford so as to let myself really enjoy it. So got myself a seat that is not so shabby and can see the stage oh so clearly.
So just got back. It was marvellous. Spectacular. Lovely. I was laughing along. Entertaining. My head is filled with its songs, and the dance moves. Its electrifying! Great musical experience for a first timer like me.

The show started with the casts asking us viewers to get on the stage and have some Rock and Roll Time and dance your heart out. The one giving it all, got prizes! Then the show started immediately with Grease,Summer Nights among the few. I have to restraint myself from roaring out the words of Summer Nights too and jumping up and down cheering them on. Need. To. Be. Matured, Self-Possesed . Young Woman. and Watch Nonchalantly looking like I had been to musicals from diapers.
But by golly, the peps of "Danny" is like wow. He got great bod. Ehem. Of course, he gave great performance. And "Vince Fontaine" popping out now and then giving anecdotes and filling out the storyline is hugely entertaining. You also got to drool over admire all the tight fitting clothes the cast is wearing."Rizzo" have the longest legs. And she seems to be wearing those short tight tight most of the time. I think cast-wise, it would be the most fun to play her. She get to have all the fun part and all those great dance moves too. Can see with own eyes, real life swinging, legs all around the abs move, twirling, men picking up women effortlessly (I meant that literally of course).

The set is simple, but effective. The transition are quick and don't leave audience hanging. Of course they are expert, and have been doing this, since I did not exist in the world. (Misc Fact: The musical started at 1971). So this is kacang to them right? Yeps yeps. And it shows on the energy shown by the cast.
However I believe the main thing that people are coming to see this musical for is for the timeless catchy vibrant songs and its cool 50s dance moves and of course to relive Grease!
What can I say..... Grease Lightning!
p/s: Yeah. The pics, I took it from Ticketcharge.com. I did take some. But camera phone is so lousy and my damn cable have the habit of dissapearing. And for those asking for me to videotape it. Sori. No can do. I would probably be thrown out and fined. But I'll see if my friend managed it. But what the pics shown is as it is tonight.
