My friend informed me there was MPH clearance sale going on at Balakong. Interest piqued because the books are priced from RM1 so my husband ok je bawak sefamili there. I think people had been buying in bulks because there were barely any nice books there when I reached last Saturday afternoon. Mainly lot of school workbooks and puzzles book priced at RM1. Story books around RM2-4 (still cheap) and some popular books at 80% off. Bolehlah. Stationery murah like files and gam also placed. Some of the books bought . Some of the kids haul.  The kids bising there is no coloring books since they want some. We manage to find some after some digging but ade satu or dua je sesuai.  Boleh la tu.  Anyway yesterday also jalan2 di Linc saje nak tengok tempat orang have-have makan.  It is a very instagram friendly place I guess, and penuh dengan tempat makan yang boleh makan once or twice a year je.  The kids love the pretty place....

Big Little Lies

Have you watched the series? It was magnificent. Anyway I feel like I am gonna do away doing reviews in this blog because I feel like I have to ramble long and it is a bother to find image and synopsis. I am lazy. However maybe some exceptional books I will make an exception. And since I feel like I wanna talk about Big Little Lies both the series and book, so there it is. Also now Emmy nominated series. The synopsis of the book which almost the same can be described of the series: Big Little Lies  follows three women, each at a crossroads (taken from Goodreads below): Madeline is a force to be reckoned with. She’s funny and biting, passionate, she remembers everything and forgives no one. Her ex-husband and his yogi new wife have moved into her beloved beachside community, and their daughter is in the same kindergarten class as Madeline’s youngest ( how  is this possible?). And to top it all off, Madeline’s teenage daughter seems to be choosing Madeline’s e...

Books I have read. Shorty short reviews.

I havent been reading as much as I like. I also found out my cat peed on the bottom part of my bookcase. So that is gonna be a hassle. I have to rethink what I am gonna place at the bottom of bookcase. Anyway, despite that. I had been reading some. And also I like to keep my reading reviews updated because sometimes I forgot which book I had read. Below are the shorty short reviews. I could not be arsed to provide a synopsis. The Convenient Marriage by Georgette Heyer My rating: 2 of 5 stars It started off charming but then the heroine loses my goodwill after a while. She continues to be silly and it exasperates me. An ok read. But not something I am gonna pick up again. Sprig Muslin by Georgette Heyer My rating: 3 of 5 stars It is a delight that this time the plucky little girl did not catch the aging bachelor eyes. A bit better than the other book I had read ( A Convenient Marriage). It is more of an adventure of one girl and her benevolent guardian wh...

Harry Potter and the Misunderstood Child

Yes the title is different, but this feels more apt lah Everyone was clamoring for this book when it first came out. But then silence. No gushes on how good it was or "shit..  so Ron/Harry/Snape/Hermione do whatevs".  Now the summary is, it is set just before Albus Snape Potter started his Hogwarts year. He befriended Draco's son. And basically dark forces are still in play even though the good side had win, thus Harry as the Head of the Magical Law Enforcement had his hands full. He also have quite a strained relationship with Albus . So the story is mostly centered on Albus.  As for the review... let just say, this is not a book. This is a screenplay because JK Rowling I guess feels like the other people who can't go to London to see their play also deserved to know the story. Which is kinda true. So the book feels bare-boned and without a soul.  It delighted me that Albus went to Hogwarts but it also makes me yearn for all those description...

Sookie Stackhouse Series

I first watched True Blood but then it becomes a tad unwatchable after Season 3 I think. Sookies just seems a lot whiny to me. Someone tells me to try to read the books because Sookie Stackhouse is a much more acceptable heroine in the books. That is usually the case pon kan.  Kurang 3 books, this is a 13 series books. Took me a year to finish all.  So the novels series by Charlaine Harris ; The Southern Vampire Mysteries basically chronicled Sookie's life. I would say the timeline from she first meet Bill to the last book event is maybe give or take 5 years? Around book 6 or 7, I was thinking, damn Sookie have a lot of near death events. I think towards the end, even Charlaine Harris thinks it had become a tad bit ludicrous.  I don't feel like posting a synopsis, because almost everybody knows of True Blood. I only watched the last episode of True Blood just to see how it ends, and I like how the series end. For the book, I am quite satisfied with it too....

Why Not Me

I got another free credit from Audiobooks and I decided to use it for Mindy Kaling new book which is Why Not Me. She had said earlier on it is not a memoir/autobiography and anyway, she already had another book on which dealt mostly on her life pre Hollywood and during the Office time.  It feels more like a collection of blog posts though, like you are reading someone musings about life, outlook and whatthehellarepeoplethinking..  Since I got to know of Mindy Kaling when I start watching Mindy Project so I hugely enjoyed this since alot of the things that she wrote about is her experience during the show. Like I said earlier I started to listen to audiobook mostly to kill the monotony of washing dishes, but after all the dishes had been washed, I still can't stop listening to it.  There were ranting, there are funny anecdotes, there are friendship lessons that most people in their late 20s and 30s would totally understand and commencement speech th...

Another reviews

This month batch of reviews! Late Night Talking by Leslie Schnur My rating: 2 of 5 stars About a late night NYC talk show host whose topics mostly deal with etiquettes and day to day minor aggravations ( cutting queues, inconsiderate drivers etc). It was ok. The story deals with how the main character deals with her past, romantic attachments and friendship. And her outlook on life basically. Basic chick lit. Except it feels not quite there. The character feels like a caricature. I would be more interested to read about her best friend. Her struggle on her life is actually just.. common sense. Yes. I don't like the main characters and most of the time the banter between Jeannie and Nicholas went far too long which turn off the charm. It all feels a little lackluster even if Jeannie is very passionate. Sorry. It all feels blah to me The Goldsmith's Daughter by Tanya Landman My rating: 3 of 5 stars A story of an Aztec girl during ...

The Reluctant Politician

I was reading this during the month of the WSJ and Sarawak Report barrage of damning articles about 1MDB and Najib Razak. This makes for a thoughtful read.  I wonder if the politicians then or now had failed us.  The Reluctant Politician: Tun Dr Ismail and His Time by Ooi Kee Beng My rating: 3 of 5 stars This is the biography of the late Tun Dr Ismail. I was mostly interested in this book because Tun Ismail was my distant relative. His grandmother is my great grandmother. So yes, personally I had listened to the family story ( not much to tell as I say... distant) so it feels like I should know more what he did. However even without all the family ties that draws me to the book, I have to say I enjoyed it immensely. We don't know much about Tun Ismail in the history books. It is particularly interesting because this is the collection of men, Tun Abd Rahman, Tun Ismail, Tun Abd Razak that shaped Malaysia. All those policy that we are still debat...

All about zombies

Most people know I love zombies genre. I gobbled the series, movies, comics about zombies without get bored of them . Though yes, it is becoming too mainstream. This is why when there is a book about zombies I would always want to read about it. Some of these books I had read a while back, more than 2 years for like the compilation of short stories in the Living Dead. I think it would be easier if I just grouped my zombies book review in one place. I am not gonna place the synopsis, because most of these stories are just about zombies and zombies apocalypse survivors.  The Living Dead by John Joseph Adams My rating: 3 of 5 stars I am putting it to 3 stars because there are some I likes and some I don't like. I had read this book on and off for years and I had now just manage to finish it ( by skipping the last story because .. honestly I can't just be bothered anymore) . There were wonderful stories, bad stories and disturbing stories. I like the...

Popular Warehouse Book Sales

I am always thrilled to be in a book warehouse sales. As you all should know by now.  Also I am not too thrilled about the Big Bad Wolf Sales nowadays because of the crowd. And their promotions. Someone mentioned that people are almost killing themselves in order to win the passes to get to the preview sales and they don't win any prizes either. True. Throw those people a bone la at least.  On the other hand, they are geniuses in not having to do much for promotion because the fans who hope to get the passes will do it for them.  Hehe. While I was one of em, but last year, I went for the preview passes and the crowd is just as maddening if I go to other days, so this year I macam malas beria to win the passes.  Anyway, not dissing the BBW because I want to talk about the Popular Book Warehouse sales. Because I like variety. Also there are some redundant authors in some book warehouse sales, which I believe some publishing houses are not available in...

Another option for cheap books

A while ago I tried Book Depository to buy some books that I am unable to find here. Actually I was so charmed watching Austenland ( if its in Astro, watch it because it is a charming chick lit), I felt like I have to get the novel too which is written by Shannon Hale btw . The cheapest option then was buying it from Book Depository and alang2 buying books online of course it have to be more than 1. Save duit parking and tol and minyak also!  Anyway.. the other book that I bought is Libba Bray Gemma Doyle trilogy. Felt like, maybe I should buy one first to see if I like it. Then bought it later on. Also only the first book have discount. Hehe.  Anyway, I read the first book and love it ( though it have its weaknesses), and bile time I nak beli the other 2 books, book depository still do not offer any discounts for these 2 book sequels. And our currency had gone down so much against the USD that it became reallly expensive.  I tried searching locally but it wa...

August book reviews!

Flashforward by Robert J. Sawyer My rating: 3 of 5 stars Synopsis: Two minutes and seventeen seconds that changed the world Suddenly, without warning, all seven billion people on Earth black out for more than two minutes. Millions die as planes fall from the sky, people tumble down staircases, and cars plow into each other. But that’s the least of the survivors’ challenges. During the blackout, everyone experienced a glimpse of what his or her future holds—and the interlocking mosaic of these visions threatens to unravel the present. I first watched the series ( horrible series though I wish John Cho is in more worthy shows) then I saw this book on sale and thought ehh.. why not. I was surprised on how much I like it. The 'sciency' part of it is easy to understand enough. The writing is simple , even the characters are simple. It is a bit weird towards the end but I guess eh ok je la. The plot is simple, a worldwide blackout that caused ...

I wish audiobook is not so darn expensive

I tried out audiobook for the first time and I liked it! Hence the title. Ok .. let me just start on how I get started on audiobook when I tried to read ebook, but just failed. I like the idea of ebook, but whenever I hold my phones I will just itching to go to social media or games ( mainly Candy Crush, but I have a healthy obsession with Wordament and Plants Vs Zombies 2 too ).  So yes. I stop using ebook. Maybe if I have Kindle, or it is so easy to buy here or ebook is easier to buy or I started travelling or posted somewhere that it is just insane to bring a whole suitcase of books that I need ebooks. That is the only reason I guess I will start using Kindle or Nook or something similar. Because I can't read on my phone people. My phone is to be used for only frivolous stuffs.  I was reading a bookworm blog on how audiobooks makes her read or listen to more books ever since she had kids. Those who have kids will lament on how hard it is to find time to read books...

Finished several books so...

Short reviews sebab not feeling wordy . Hehe. I like that I am reading a lot btw. Though I think I may have to start being choosy in what I read. The Broker by John Grisham My rating: 3 of 5 stars Synopsis from Wiki: The Broker  is a  suspense  novel written by American author  John Grisham  and published in the United States on January 11, 2005. The novel follows the story of Joel Backman, a newly pardoned prisoner who had tried to broker a deal to sell the world's most powerful  satellite  surveillance system to the highest bidder. - Simple quick read. Enjoyable. - The main question or the plot device does not make any sense. But I enjoyed the book so I dont care much about the plot device. - Characters are ok enough. Not fleshed out enuogh. I probably like Luigi more. - The book just makes me want to go to Italy and hungry. Maybe John Grisham wrote this when he was in Bologna because je made Bologna sounds appealing and that is ...
