The Wide-Awake Princess by E.D. Baker
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
About the book
In this new stand-alone fairy tale, Princess Annie is the younger sister to Gwen, the princess destined to be Sleeping Beauty. When Gwennie pricks her finger and the whole castle falls asleep, only Annie is awake, and only Annie—blessed (or cursed?) with being impervious to magic—can venture out beyond the rose-covered hedge for help. She must find Gwen's true love to kiss her awake.
Read this months back... and not much to say about it. Bought this for my niece who is 9, and she loves it. Before giving it to her, I read it first.. just to make sure no inappropriate stuffs is ongoing in there. Ok I lied. Of course I read it because I wanted to. I love Y.A. Especially reimagining of fairy tales.
It was a cute story. A good book to give to young girls and my niece who is into princesses is currently reading it the second time. So that is saying something aight.

Paths of Glory by Jeffrey Archer
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
This is a story of George Mallory. I was long intrigued about Mallory. I think he was an extraordinary man and is now a living legend.
To those who don't know who he was, he was the man that supposedly reached Everest first, but either died before he reached it and after.. only God knows ( or at least until they found Sandy Irvine Kodak camera). ( and google Sandy Irvine... he was so handsome!) Tetiba fangirl di situ.
Anyway what about this book?
I like Jeffrey Archer. I think he wrote decent action-thriller books. And this book, this man that the writer obviously idolized, maybe is his Everest?
To me Archer failed to capture the soul of Mallory. He got the gist of it , I like how he painted Mallory during his childhood as a cheeky confident boy.. but along the way.. maybe after he meet Ruth, there is some essence missing. I don't know what Archer could have done honestly, but to me, I didn't get Mallory here. His determination is somewhat lost, his love for the 2 ladies while is portrayed beautifully... but his personality is diminished or maybe reduced here. I do believe there is a side to him that with a masterful writer could come out beautifully.. He must be a force to be reckoned with that all 3 expeditions , the men are willing to follow him to unchartered territories. And Cottie Saunders to be so in love with him.
Apart from that. The book is entertaining, engrossing and hard to put down. It is an easy read and at the end of the book together with the writer , we hope that he indeed conquered the summit.
